Reserve a May departure with a Kansas City travel agent and you are inside a month that splits at its last Monday. Eight rows run in May. Two belong to May alone: six starts inside one named week on the northern Pembrokeshire coast path, and weekly starts through the month in the Minho, in northern Portugal, driven yourself. The other six are long season rows that happen to be open.

Both are pinned there by things you can go and look at. On the Welsh cliffs the thrift covers the seaward turf in the second and third weeks and is done by early June, and the guesthouses that take one party at a time hold those rooms for that week only. Britain gives up two Mondays in May, and the second one decides things. School half term across England and Wales falls in that week, the trail fills with families walking short sections, and the small houses along the northern half are spoken for months ahead. Portugal runs the other way. The first of May is a public holiday and the village kitchens shut for it, but Portuguese schools work straight through, so one week of the Minho is as gettable as another.

At home the same Monday closes something: the Ozark row runs April to November, and its last weekend of May is the only one in that span with every boat committed.

A week either side of the same trip

Move the Welsh week seven days earlier and the thrift is arriving rather than out, the bluebells in the bracken are still at their best, the sea is 52 degrees rather than 55, and the light gives out twenty minutes sooner. Move it later and you are inside half term, losing the four rooms that make an inn to inn route work.

Move the Portuguese week back into April and the rivers run high and the color of strong tea, the canopy is open sky, and the growers have no hour to give you. Move it into June and inland afternoons reach the mid eighties and the shallow pools drop and go green.

The six that are simply open

The six long season rows sit somewhere else in their own year. Réunion has come out of its wet half and the cirque paths are drying underfoot. Madagascar is in the second month of an April to November window. The Lycian shore is in the best fortnight it gets, sea near 68 degrees and the heat weeks off. Palawan is at the hot dry end of its season. On Zanzibar and Pemba, May is the heaviest stretch of the long rains, and this office says so before anything is placed.

Figures in May sit under the same rows in June and above what April asks, because houses in both countries price it as a shoulder month until the final week. Every figure on all twenty-six departures at once belongs to its own window.
